Arts Integration & Physical Education

Arts Integration is the idea of integrating "The Arts" (Music, Art, Technology, Physical Education) into the general education classroom and the thought is that this method is a far more effective and engaging way for students to learn. I never really thought about its benefits or even the method itself when I first started teaching, but last year I transferred to a school that focused heavily on integrating "the arts" into their classrooms. This method of teaching intrigued me so much that I decided to go to a Arts Integration Conference at The University of Maryland. Attending this conference got me thinking of various ways in which I could incorporate my area of expertise (Physical Education) to the general education classroom and vice versa. Below is a list of ideas I've come up with and used in my classroom thus far. Some have been successful and others have been...how shall I say it...a learning experience. Either way my hope is that through this blog site I will be able to share some of my ideas and thoughts about Arts Integration as well as other Physical Education related topics.

Arts Integration/ Physical Education Ideas:

- Bowling Unit in P.E. relates directly to Math and Fractions and can easily be associated with converting fractions to decimals.
- Rope Jumping can easily incorporate Math skills such as probability, addition, subtraction, and multiplication through the use of dice.
- Cup stacking is an extremely popular sport with students at the Elementary and Middle school levels and it also happens to directly correlate with timed trials and graphing those trials.
