After reading the National Education Standards for Students (NETS-S) and comparing them to the technology standards for teachers I've found that many of the standards are currently being addressed at all grade levels in my school district. When I started teaching in my school's district a few years back, technology became a class at the elementary level and was added in as a related arts/ specials class. To be quite honest, that was one of the main reasons why I decided to get my masters in integrating technology into the classroom, because I saw that my school district was moving in that direction and I knew how important it was for me to stay on the cutting edge of things.
As I looked at the National Education Standards for Students (NETS-S) I found that I could use the GAME plan process with my students to help them develop proficiency in Communication and Collaboration, and Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making. I feel that I can easily address these two areas because my class environment lends well to social activities. I already have students set goals in the beginning of the year, take action to achieve those goals throughout the year, monitor their progress, and evaluate and extend their learning through the help of a program called fitnessgram. My hope for the future is that I could use this method of teaching more frequently throughout the school year to better prepare my students for their next level of education.

ReplyDeleteAfter reading your blog post I thought about the exact same thing. Technology is always changing. It is becoming more a part of out lives. The day I decided to go back to school for technology was when a third grader had to show me how to use a smart board. It was really embarrassing that I had no clue how to use it. It just showed how out of touch I was from technology. You couldn’t have said it better when you said that you knew how important it was for you to stay on the cutting edge of things. Everyone always asks me, “how come your not getting your masters in health?” well frankly everyone knows about health. How can you really incorporate health into your classroom, It is difficult to talk about things when students are only there for 30-45 minutes. The main focus is to get them moving in activity. That’s why I think using technology outside of P.E is important for students to learn more about health and nutrition. P.E in my eyes has two components the physical movement part in the classroom, and learning the knowledge outside the classroom with the use of technology like blogs, wikis, Youtube Etc. Students need to learn more about everything that keeps you healthy in general. The only way to do that successfully is to have students learn outside the classroom as well.

David,
ReplyDeleteI have always been interested in technology but did not consider getting my Master's in this field until August of 2009 when I tried to make a career transition from classroom teaching to a more specialized area. I read up on the changing demands of preparing students for the 21st century and had already witnessed my own eight year old daughter growing up as a digital native with rapidly developing technological skills. It was then that I decided to become more aware of the technology applications (needed for today's diverse learners) and different available forms of digital media I could incorporate in the classroom to increase student engagement and so that I could be more successful in teaching and students could become more successful in learning.
The G.A.M.E. plan keeps me (as well as students) directed and focused on content objectives and NETS standards needed for today's classrooms and students, regardless of the area you teach. Physical fitness, health, and nutrition are all subjects that need more attention and in need of more technology integration.

ReplyDeleteI am impressed with how you adapted to technology your whole life. You knew many of these principles long before you became a PE teacher. You had the most fun of any kid on video games i've ever seen and you did games that taught you something. This was a natural fit as far as i am concerned. you graduation packet came in this week so come on by and pick it up. Congrats on the blog. Cool.
